Go Barça!

8 September, 2011 (04:29) | Living in Europe

Tot el camp
es un clam
som la gent Blau Grana
Tan se val d’on venim
Si del sud o del nord
ara estem d’acord
estem d’acord
una bandera ens agermana.
Blau Grana al vent
un crit valent
tenim un nom
el sap tothom

Barça!, Barça!, Baaaarça!!!!

Although I am not a soccer fan or follower, its hard not to get caught up in the excitement of living in the city with Europe’s top soccer team. The above iPhone recording is of the lady who sold me my Barça flag, which I now hang outside when I know there’s a big game on. Why not? It definitely is a hit with the neighbors.

So in keeping with the spirit I bought Quixote a Barça jersey which turns him from a star into a superstar! When Quixote wears his Barça jersey, the paparazzi-like cameras follow.

In the following photos he makes friends with a fellow fan:

My charismatic dog makes yet another friend.

My Catalan dog. (el meu petit gos Barça)

And here’s the Catalan Barça flag I bought from the lady who sings the anthem above:

Our Barça flag, with Catalan anthem written on it.

So, although I’m not an avid follower of soccer the game, I am an avid documentarian. Last year, for example, I recorded (and blogged) the moment of the FIFA cup victory from my balcony – once I knew victory was imminent I simply turned on my Nagra and recorded the following, in which you can hear the ship horns, fireworks, general happy cacophony:

The sound of victory; Spain wins the 2010 FIFA trophy and the city is awash with celebration.

A great victory over ManU. very satisfying (even to a German football fan less than fond of Messi). But the recent victories over Napoli and Madrid, though less important in the football world, where greater because Barça defeated historic rivals and also because I was in the barri to live the experience.

The casual observer though should walk the Carrer of Barcelona to understand the spirtual support, joy and vitality this football club injects in the daily lives of Catalunya.

The closest parallel are Red Sox baseball fans in American sport . These cities are filled with hard working, passionate sport fans. The sport clubs represent the vary character of the respective cities. One can not turn a corner without seeing a Red Sox hat or piece of clothing as one can not avoid a Catalan in Barça colors, the mulitiplicity of their various jerseys.

Along with family, these clubs give reason to face another day.  They resusitate the daily lives of their citizens. The faith and love reciprocal.

Love the recorded song — such great moments, a woman in the street singing acapella, with the sounds of life around her. A precious thing.

Thanks for taking the time to share it with us, though many have no idea what she is singing about! And for me, a Catalan adoptee, it’s the first time I’ve seen the ‘lyrics’ in writing. Now, I can’t wait for the opportunity to sing along and watch the expression on my friends’ and partner’s faces… Ha…Visca Catalunya,Jenifer

I keep listening to the recording of the Barca song over and over again. Such a pretty voice and a wonderful sounding language. Thanks for sharing.
